Gabares in the Dordogne
23 October 2023

Gabares are traditional boats once used to transport goods on the Dordogne rivers and other waterways in France. These flat-bottomed boats were adapted to shallow waters and were efficient in navigating the winding rivers. At the time, they transported wood, wine, salt and other local products to larger ports, including Bordeaux.
With the development of the railways in the 19th century, gabares gradually lost their utilitarian role. Today, they are mainly used for tourist activities, offering visitors a unique way to discover the magnificent landscapes and medieval villages that line the Dordogne, such as Beynac, La Roque-Gageac or Castelnaud.
Gabare cruises allow you to delve into regional history while enjoying an exceptional natural setting, combining heritage, traditions and nature.
